moobreeder / HELP
  1. MOOBREEDER HELP
  2. ===============
  3.
  4. MooBreeder is a simple cowbreeding game designed for educational use at
  5. Key Stage 3. It demonstrates the basic principles of selective breeding.
  6.
  7.
  8. AIM
  9.
  10. The aim of the game is to breed a cow that is "excellent" for your chosen
  11. use. At the start of the game, you are asked to select this goal from
  12. the options "dairy", "meat", or "plowing". You will be notified once you
  13. have achieved your goal, and told how many generations you took to do so.
  14.
  15.
  16. COWS
  17.
  18. Each cow may be male or female and has four traits: "milk", "meat",
  19. "strength" and "aggression". Each trait is given an integer value -
  20. generally, higher is better (except in the case of "aggression").
  21. Each cow also has a unique ID number and a record of its generation
  22. and who its parents were.
  23.
  24. Cows are rated for a given use with the formula:
  25.
  26. rating = (traitvalue * 2) - (aggression^2)
  27.
  28. So if a dairy cow has a milk trait value of 12 and an aggression of 3,
  29. her rating will be 15. (A rating of 20 or above is considered "excellent".)
  30.
  31.
  32. THE HERD
  33.
  34. The herd is the accumulation of all the cows you own. Initially, it
  35. will consist only of four cows that are randomly initialised and probably
  36. not very good at anything; as if you had just tamed four wild buffaloes.
  37. But as you breed your cows, your herd will continue to grow and hopefully
  38. start to contain some better animals (if you're a clever breeder...).
  39.
  40.
  41. BREEDING
  42.
  43. When a bull and a cow breed, they produce either one or two calves.
  44. The calves' traits will depend on their parents', modified by a random
  45. factor. So if you breed a strong bull with a strong cow, you are more
  46. likely to get a strong calf.
  47.
  48. There are some restrictions to which animals may breed together.
  49. Obviously, you need a male and a female. Secondly, they may not be
  50. direct siblings, as in real life this would be likely to lead to
  51. genetic and developmental problems. Thirdly, they may be at most three
  52. generations apart.
  53.
  54.
  55. INTERFACE
  56.
  57. On the left you see a list of your entire herd. Double-click on an
  58. animal to have it added to a parent slot on the top right. When you
  59. have selected two parents, click on the `Breed` button to have them
  60. mate. Their offspring will then appear in the bottom right area.
  61. Double-click on a calf to add it back to your herd. Right-clicking
  62. on any animal will bring up a context menu that allows you to remove
  63. this animal from your herd.
  64.
  65. If you wish to save your game progress, you may do so via the
  66. `File` menu. Restoring a previously saved game or resetting to a new
  67. game may be done from the same menu.
